Hand Painted 1920's Folding Fan
The folding hand fan originated in Asia and came to Europe in the 1500's. It was seen as exotic and very stylish and would have only been used by the very wealthiest of woman. By the 1800's fans had become very popular and would have been used for all occasions from parties to funerals. The fan was also used as a form of communication - albeit very subtle.
This fan is made with wooden stays with hand painted fabric decoration around 1920. With its bright colours it would have most likely been used in a social occasion.
The fan is in very good condition.
When opened the fan extends to a width of 40 cm and a height of 22cm.
