Large Early 20th Century Imari Plate
In the middle of the 19th century, Japan started trading again with the West. At this time, all Japanese decoration started to become fashionable.
This design called Imari, was very popular during the 19th century and into the begining of the 20th century, with its bright red and blue colours. These plates were produced in Japan and exported to England in large quantites. This plate is of a good size and has an attractive wavy edge, and would have been used for display or as a serving plate. It would have belonged to a family of reasonable wealth.
