Victorian fashions precipitated a boom in elaborate deserts designed to impress, with ladies of the day competing with each other over acquiring the most unusual moulds, typically of exotic flora and fauna. This is a superb example of this trend. Kitchens would proudly display their best jelly moulds and copper-ware to the envy of their peers.
