Large Victorian Brass Page Turner
Every house had a family bible, sometimes these were huge heavy things. If the house was a wealthy one, they would use a page turner to turn the large pages. Sometimes these were very plain and would be used in, for example, a Wesleyan chapel, where ornamentasion was frowned upon, other times they would decorate a private chapel in a large country house and would be more ornate. They were also used to cut large pieces of paper when folded.
In the middle of the 19th century Japan started trading again with the west. At this time all Japanese decoration started to become fashionable. Japanese design would influence everything from pottery to furniture. This is an ornate brass page turnerwith Japanese decoration. It would have been in the home of a prossional person or large country house.
