Metal lanterns would have been a necessary part of all homes and establishments during the 18th and 19th centuries. Before the invention of electricity, all buildings would have been lit by either candle lanterns or paraffin lamps.
This black metal lantern would be lit by candles and carried around the house, mostly outside at night. It has glass to all sides and a carrying handle. This would be used in a commoner's cottage or below stairs by the staff in a larger country or town house.
