Early Victorian Old Sheffield Plate Pepperette
This is an old Sheffield plate pepperette. Old Sheffield plate is different to electroplated, it has a thin sheet of silver that was rolled onto copper, as opposed to silver particles electrolysed on to nickel or stainless steel. Because of the nature of how they are made and also their age, old Sheffield plate always shows ware through the silver to the copper beneath. It is in a classical shape. This would have been in a wealthy household.
The pepperette has a small amount of the copper showing on the edges and on the relief of the lid. The lid works well and is a tight fit when replaced. No dinges to the body.
