Whistles were in popular use during the 19th and 20th century for all manner of things. A policeman, fireman, station master etc. would all use one in a professional capacity. They would also be used by a lady on her own, as a security measure, she could blow the whistle in any situation of distress to summon help. At the begging of the 20th century the Boy Scouts and Girl Guides were established, every scout and girl guide would be issued with a whistle.

The first of these whistles is marked “The Metropolitan” and was made by J. Hudson and Co in the 1920s, Hudson became the largest manufacturer of whistles from the beginning of the 20th century. The second whistle is marked “The Acme Whistle” this was also made by Hudsons at the same time, the Acme Thunderer went on to being the largest selling whistle in the world.

Both whistles work well with their pea in tact, the surface has small scratches, but are in general good condition.
