During the 19th century every gentleman and lady would have a calling card. If you called upon a person in society, the butler would ask you for your calling card, this would then be offered to the lady or gentleman of the house to see whether they wished to recieve you or not. Hence the need for a card case, these would come in all manner of materials from mother of pearl, to tortoiseshell, silver plate, leather, silver and even gold.
This card case is made from tortoiseshell, it has a tiny metal hinge and a push button clasp.
The tortoiseshell has a good patina but there are several scuffs and very small splits to the edges. It opens well.
