Until the 1670s, wine was served at the table in jug or green glass bottle. The decanter started to appear after 1670 and usually took a jug form, it wasn't until the middle of the 1700s that decanters were seen in a form we are more familiar with now.
 
A lovely pair of gilded decanters from the Victorian period. Each free-blown with a polished pontil mark below, in a globe and shaft shape, with fine gilded edges to the decanter and top of the stopper. These would have been found in a middle to high income household.
 
Condition is good with no chips or cracks to the decanters, the two stoppers both have tiny flea bite chips to the bottoms, which is not visable when they are in place.
