The first photographs were invented in 1826 by Joseph Nicephore Niepce. During the next 50 years or so it was only the wealthiest who could afford photographs. By the end of the 1800 it became more accesible to the middle classes, and this time millions of photographs would have been produced around the globe. Portrait photographs were particuclarly popular, and a child would be taken into a high street photographer for in important event such a birthday. These studios would have a set built with props to aid the shot, hence why you see lots of the same style backgrounds at this time.

 

These are three Victorian photographs of children, they are all dressed like small adults, the little girl with a long gold chain and fob and one of the little bos with a bowler hat.

 

The photographs are all in good contion, the board which they are mounted on has a few very minor scuffs to the edges.
