From the seventeenth century onwards, there was scarcely a household in Britain that did not possess some items of pewter: plates, bowls, tankards, spoons, candlesticks were just some of the everyday items made from pewter.
 
These very large pewter serving plates or chargers would be used in taverns and country houses.
 
Whilst this charger was made prior to the period RJ Maypole specialises in, robust items such as this had longevity and would have been passed down and used for generations, pewter items enjoyed popularity right up until the 1930's, and had remarkably little change in design or style.   This charger dates from the 1780s
 
No cracks or tears but surface has marks due to its age.
