The Victorians were very fond of all things botanical and the fern decoration appears on all manor of things from pottery and glass to furnishings. The Victorian period brought with it fern-mania, which drew enthusiasts from all social backgrounds. 
 
This is a lovely water jug with fern engraving. It would have been used in most households of reasonable wealth.
