Until the 1670s, wine was served at the table in jug or green glass bottle. The decanter started to appear after 1670 and usually took a jug form, it wasn't until the middle of the 1700s that decanters were seen in a form we are more familiar with now. Cranberry glass is a reddish pink glass made by adding gold salts or colloidal gold to molten glass, first made during the late Roman empire, but this skill was then lost. It was rediscovered by Bohemian glass makers in the 17th century. Cranberry glass reached its height during Victorian England.
 
This is a lovely cranberry glass claret jug, it has a ribbed design to the body and a hand applied handle, with an original ornate stopper. This would have been in the home of a middle to high income family.
