In the 18th and 19th century lots of small boxes, of all shapes and sizes, were made to contain little trinkets. Used in the bedroom or in dressing rooms.

This is a typical Victorian box, velvet with a brass panel, decorated with cherubs heads - a popular romantic motif used by the Victorians.
