Wicker shopping baskets have been used for the last 150 years or more, it was the practical lightweight durable material which, if looked after, lasted for several decades and was the popular choice of the housewife or housekeeper.

This is a shallow flat basket and would be used for shopping for just a few items. At this time, ladies would shop most days for fresh goods, so a smaller basket would be used on a daily shopping expedition.
