Large Late Victorian Steamer Trunk

Large Late Victorian Steamer Trunk

SKU: RJ00244
£125.00Price

In the 19th century and early 20th century, travel was by carriage, train or sea. Particularly in the 19th century, people's clothing was quite bulky, especially for ladies as they would wear several layers of elaborate clothing, and so suitcases and trunks needed to be quiet large. The majority of these cases would be leather, and the more expensive the case, the heavier it would be. Large trunks were made from metal and wood, often covered in canvas with wooden struts to protect them. Up until the second quarter of the 20th century, all people of society were expected to wear hats so hat boxes were also needed for thier transportation. To leave home for any length of time required an extensive array of luggage, and often staff to carry it.

This hard trunk was made from canvas-covered wood, then fitted with additional wooden struts to protect. It is fitted with brass fasteners and locks (the keys are long lost). Metal caps are attached to the corners of the wooden struts to give it more protection. There is a maker's label for Charles J Withnell Scarborough. There are initials painted in black at one end to identify the owner. This trunk would have been used by a household of decent means.

The trunk has one carrying hand on one end, the other strap is missing, or could have been removed allowing the trunk to sit on end unencumbered by the bulky leather strap.  It is in solid condition with several small scuffs but over all the condition is good.
