Folding hand fans originated in Asia and came to Europe in the 1500's. It was seen as exotic and very stylish and would have only been used by the very wealthiest of woman. By the 1800's fans had become very popular and would have been used for all occasions from parties to funerals. The fan was also used as a flirtatious form of communication - albeit very subtle.

This fan is hand painted in a chinoiserie design onto paper and has bone stays, complete with tassel.

Very good condition.

Dimensions: 43cm by 26cm when extended.
