A Victorian Ladies Folding Feather Fan

SKU: RJ00126
£120.00Price

The folding hand fan originated in Asia and came to Europe in the 1500's. It was seen as exotic and very stylish and would have only been used by the very wealthiest of woman. By the 1800's fans had become very popular and would have been used for all occasions from parties to funerals. The fan was also used as a flirtatious form of communication - albeit very subtle.

Beautiful hand painted folding fan with bone stays and feather plumes, with a gilded tracery to the top, complete with tassel.

In reasonable condition but quite fragile.

Dimensions: 54cm by 29cm when open.
