Late Victorian Ladies Black Mourning Fan

Late Victorian Ladies Black Mourning Fan

SKU: RJ00124
£75.00Price

The folding hand fan originated in Asia and came to Europe in the 1500's. It was seen as exotic and very stylish and would have only been used by the very wealthiest of woman. By the 1800's fans had become very popular and would have been used for all occasions from parties to funerals. The fan was also used as a flirtatious form of communication - albeit very subtle.

This fan being black would be for a lady in mourning. After the initial morning period, it would be acceptable for ladies to go out in society, but still dress in black. This fan would have been an evening fan with it having sequin decoration.

Very good condition.

Dimensions: 47cm by 24cm when open.
