Iron and Brass Salter's Family Scale

Iron and Brass Salter's Family Scale

SKU: RJ00066
£125.00Price

From the beginning of the 19th century, a kitchen scale would be a balance scale used with different weights. We later progressed into the spring balance scale and did away with bulky weights.

An iconic piece of Victorian kitchenalia, this Salter's Family Scale is from the era when things were made properly ... The body is formed of ornately cast iron with a pair of Griffins sat either side of a cartouche, with laurel leaves wrapped around the finely detailed brass dial (look at the way the numbers are angled to follow the outer edge of the dial!). The scale is topped with a tin scale pan, where grains, flour etc would be placed for weighing...

These scales are in good, functioning condition with one notable scratch from the centre of the dial to the right hand screw and only some of the gilding to the ironwork remains.

Dimensions: The scales stand 33cm high are 21cm wide at the base and are 8cm deep, the pan is 22cm in diameter.
