At the beggining of the 19th century many gentlemen, and sometimes ladies, smoked pipe, and a pipe case would be a neccesary part of your travelling apparel. 
 
This pipe case is from the Netherlands and comes complete with clay pipe. The wooden case is made from sycamore with a slidding metal clasp.
 
In good condition though the pipe is slightly smaller than the case and could have been damaged at sometime and shortened.
