This is a super quality writing box or 'slope' as they were called, it is mahogany with brass inset bands and a brass cartouche to the lid engraved with the letters 'E.S.P.'
This style of box would have been taken on your travels to ensure you keep up with correspondence whilst on your journey, it would contain all that you needed such as ink bottles, paper and and dip pens.
