Victorian Glass Bon-Bon Dish

In the late 18th and 19th century, sugar was a luxury commodity, and all manner of sugar fancies would be made, such as sugared almonds, marzipan and candied fruits. These all had thier own special serving dish of either glass, silver or porcelain and were usually elevated on a stem to elevate their importance.

 

This is a very fine engraved sweetmeat or bon bon dish. It has a folded edge and hollow stem with a design of leaves engraved around the bowl. This piece would have been in the house of somebody of a reasonable income.

 

Condition is very good.
