The Victorians were very fond of all things botanical and the fern decoration appears on all manor of things from pottery and glass to furnishings gravestones, following the Victorian craze for ferns which drew enthiusiasts from all social classes.
 
This is a lovely water jug with panel cutting and fern engraving. It would have been used by a  household of reasonable wealth.
