During the 19th century, most houses did not have anyform of central heating. The stoneware foot warmer was a much needed invention during winter. Water would be boiled on the stove and poured into the bottle, it was then sealed with a screw top. These items would last for decades, the only maintenance they required was a replacement washer every few years.

 

This footwarmer is made from stoneware pottery a robust material, and would have been manufactured in Staffordshire, England. Used in most households but particularly in the lower income bracket.
