Railway lanterns were used from the start of the introduction of railways (around 1825 in the UK). Usually lit by a small paraffin burner with a wick.

 

This railway lantern has a twisting top to enable the changing of the cloured lenses; red for stop, and green for go. This would have been used by the station master to signal the train.

 

Very good condition still with original parrafn burner.
