Throughout the 19th century and into the first quarter of the 20th century, gentleman would wear detachable collars to their shirts. As all shirts were hand made, in order to extend the life of the shirt, the part that wears the quickest being the collar was made seperatly, and was attatched to the shirt at the back of the neck with collar buttons and at the front by studs. One shirt would possibly have as many as 20 collars in it's lifetime.
 
This is a tiny leather and brass box with a brass stud as a handle to the lid. These little boxes would be kept on a dressing table to keep the studs safe.
