A Group of 17 Green Glass Bottles Early 20th Century

In the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century, all taverns or public houses would have "off sales", these were items that could be purchased from the pub but consumed off premises. This would mostly be stone bottles of beer (often botanical) and soft drinks, and later in time glass bottles of the same. Glass beer bottles were introduced in the middle of the 19th Century. They were often green or brown Glass as this was cheap to produce and usually had the brewer's name displayed on them.

 

These bottles would have been only for beer and would have had a deposit paid on them re ensure there safe return. There are several different brewery names impressed into the bottles such as "Phipps Brewers Northampton"

 

The bottles are all in good condition with no obvious cracks or chips.
