During the 19th century every gentleman and lady would have a calling card. If you called upon a person in society, the butler would ask you for your calling card, this would then be offered to the lady or gentleman of the house to see whether they wished to recieve you or not. Hence the need for a card case, these would come in all manner of materials from mother of pearl, to tortoiseshell, silver plate, leather, silver and even gold.

 

This is a visiting card case decorated in cut and polished panels of mother of pearl, a very popular material used for many decorative items during the Victorian period. It has a tiny metal hinge and a push button clasp.

 

The mother of pearl is in good condition and all original.
