During the Victorian and Edwardian era, dinner parties were a fashionable pastime, ladies in society would compete with each other for the best dressed table, this brought about an increase in the manufacture of items to be used at the table. One of these things would be silver and silver plated cutlery to serve the food. All manner of tools were used, from asparagus tongs to ornate serving forks and spoons, of every size and shape.
 
This is an elaborate silver plated cake knife with an ornate handle and engraved blade. The blade is double sided, one side has a plane edge for cutting cakes such as a Victoria sponge, the other side of the blade is serrated for cutting a firmer cake such as a fruit cake. This would be in the home of a middle to high income family or in a high street establishment such as tea rooms or hotel.
 
The condition is good, there is a tiny spot of ware on the back of the blade but this is very small. No splits or breaks.
