Small wooden bowls were used during the 18th and 19th century for all manner of things in the kitchen and dinning room. These would usually be turned by a local craftsperson and would last for generations.
 
This small turned fruitwood bowl would have been used to hold a ball of wool or thread for a lady whilst knitting or sewing, it would keep the ball in its place with out it rolling on to the floor and getting dirty, as many cottages would have flag floors.
 
The condition is very good , no splits or cracks to the wood.
