Victorian Papier Mache Snuff Box

SKU: RJ00532
£35.00Price

Before the introduction of cigarettes, loose tobbaco was sold, at this same time snuff was also used, this would be made from grinding tobbaco to a fine powder, this would be inhaled through the nostrils, unlike tobbaco which had to be placed in a receptacle such as a pipe and then ignited before smoking.

This is a small papier mache snuff box inlaid with tiny pieces of mother of pearl on the lid. This type of snuff box was very popular with ladies in the Victorian times and the lady who owned this particular snuff box would have been one of moderate means.

Condition is good with no slits or cracks and all of the inlay is present. The lid closes well.
