In the 18th and 19th century every house had a fireplace, and therefore a mantlepiece, and in the grander houses, several mantlepieces. These would be decorated with all manner of things from clocks, candlesticks, photograph frames and pottery and brass ornaments.
 
This is a stained beech photograph frame from the Edwardian period, it has a black easel backing made from card to enable it to stand upright. This type of frame would be in a house of modest income.
 
The frame stands well and has no damage to the glass, there is a very small split on the front of the bottom panel.
